Early Life

Born to Kimberly Schmid and Winston Munn, Munn’s father has German, Irish, and English roots, while her mother, of Vietnamese and Chinese descent, came to the U.S. as a refugee after the Vietnam War in 1975. Munn has two brothers and two sisters. Her parents divorced when she was two, and her mother later married a member of the United States Air Force, prompting the family to move to Utah until 1986. They then relocated to Yokota Air Base near Tachikawa, Japan, where Munn spent her formative years.

She has described her stepfather as “verbally abusive,” and to cope with the tense environment, she often entertained her family by imitating teachers or performing scenes from movies. At 16, after her mother divorced her stepfather, Munn moved back to Oklahoma City with her family. She attended Putnam City North High School for her final two years and went on to the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a B.A. in journalism, along with a minor in Japanese and dramatic arts.
