Schröder is the son of a German father and a Gambian mother and has a brother and a younger sister. Growing up, he and his brother were both passionate about skateboarding until Schröder discovered basketball at age 11. After his father passed away in 2009, Schröder decided to pursue basketball seriously, choosing to wear the number 17 jersey in honor of his father’s favorite number.
