Early Life
Welch was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland, on May 22, 1958, and has a younger sister, Debbie. She attended Bygate School in Whitley Bay, followed by La Sagesse School in Newcastle upon Tyne. At the age of 13, she moved to Ebchester, County Durham, where she attended Blackfyne Grammar School in Consett and passed five GCE exams. Her interest in acting developed at 14 when she was cast in a school production of Finian’s Rainbow. Although she considered attending a teacher training college in Crewe at 17, her father and drama teacher encouraged her to apply to the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Welch was accepted, graduating in 1979 and earning her Equity Card while teaching dance at the Watford Palace Theatre.
