Early Career
Ramdin began his cricket career as a fast bowler but took up wicketkeeping out of boredom when not bowling. He later received coaching from David Williams and Jeff Dujon to improve his wicketkeeping skills. Ramdin eventually captained both the West Indies and Trinidad at the Under-19 level. During the West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka in July and August 2005, the 19-year-old Ramdin was the sole wicketkeeper in the 15-man squad, taking over from the incumbent Courtney Browne. Browne did not play international cricket after being replaced by Ramdin and retired later that year at the age of 34.
At the time of his selection, Ramdin had played only a few first-class matches, scoring three half-centuries, including one century. On his Test debut, Ramdin made 56 runs before being bowled by Gayan Wijekoon, who was also making his first Test appearance. The West Indies lost both Tests on this tour, with only three of their regular players (aside from captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul) available, due to a dispute over sponsorship.
