Kyle Kuzma Early Life
Kuzma grew up in the Flint, Michigan area, the son of Karri Kuzma, a high school shot put champion who received a college track scholarship. He has a younger half-brother, Andre, and a younger half-sister, Briana. Kuzma is biracial and met his biological father only once as an infant but considers the father of his half-siblings, Larry Smith, a father figure. Karri and Smith introduced Kuzma to basketball at a young age by placing a toy basketball hoop in the living room when he was only two years old, sparking his love for the game.
Kuzma has described Flint as a “really violent place” with many temptations to get involved in street life, but he viewed basketball as his “safe haven.” He attended Swartz Creek Community Schools before transferring to Bentley High School in Michigan, where he averaged 17.9 points, 14.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 3.4 blocks per game as a junior. Kuzma sent video tapes of his shooting to preparatory schools, and Vin Sparacio, the head coach at Rise Academy in Philadelphia, took notice of the raw talent in the 6-foot-6, 175-pound player. Kuzma then transferred to Rise Academy for his senior year, where he averaged 22 points and seven rebounds per game. Despite offers from Division I schools like Connecticut, Iowa State, Tennessee, and Missouri, Kuzma chose to play for the University of Utah.
