Crowder wasn’t highly recruited out of high school and initially committed to South Georgia Technical College before transferring to Howard College. At Howard, he led the team to an NJCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship in his sophomore season and was named State Farm Junior College Player of the Year. He then transferred to Marquette, where he earned Big East Player of the Year honors in his senior season.

After finishing his senior year, Crowder declared for the 2012 NBA Draft and was selected 34th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was traded to the Dallas Mavericks on draft night. He was later traded to the Boston Celtics in 2014, where he spent three seasons before being traded back to the Cavaliers in 2017. In 2018, Crowder joined the Utah Jazz, and in 2019, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He was traded to the Miami Heat in 2020, reaching his first NBA Finals that same year. Crowder then signed with the Phoenix Suns in 2020, reaching his second NBA Finals in 2021. After disagreements with the Suns’ front office, Crowder and the team mutually agreed to have him sit out the start of the 2022–23 season, leading to his trade to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2023. In 2024, Crowder signed with the Sacramento Kings.
