His impressive performance in domestic cricket led to his selection for the South African national team for the T20I series against West Indies in May 2010. Miller made a mark on his debut international tour with his remarkable batting skills. He achieved his first international century in an ODI match against the West Indies in 2015, while his T20I century came after seven years in the format, delivered in just 35 balls, making it the fastest century at that level.

His reputation as a power-hitter was established in the IPL when Kings XI Punjab signed him in 2011, a year after his debut. Despite this, he had to sit out the entire season. The pattern continued in 2012, and it wasn’t until 2013 that Miller played his first IPL match for Punjab. Making his debut memorable, he achieved the third-fastest IPL century in just 38 deliveries.

Miller stayed with KXIP until IPL 2019 when he was released and later picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in the following auction. After an unsuccessful two-season run, he was let go before the 2022 mega auction, where the Gujarat Titans secured him. His contribution was significant as GT emerged victorious in their debut season. In 2009, David Miller married Sarah Joy Miller, a member of the Three Graces.

David Miller Career

Domestic career

Miller played his first match in the first-class cricket for the Dolphins in the last game of the 2007–08 domestic SuperSport Series, achieving a half-century in his first innings. In the one-day MTN Domestic Championship of the same season, Miller participated in eight matches, but the final game was abandoned after three overs. Throughout the championship, Miller maintained an average of 13 runs, contributing to the Dolphins’ fifth-place finish in the league. He also represented the South African A team against Bangladesh A, emerging as the second-highest run-scorer, which led to his promotion to the senior team.

IPL Career

Miller was signed by Punjab for the 2011 IPL season for $100,000 to replace Dimitri Mascarenhas. Although he did not play any games that season, he later made a significant impact while playing for Kings XI Punjab in the 2013 Indian Premier League. Known as Killer Miller, he scored the third-fastest IPL century, scoring 101* runs in just 38 balls in Mohali. His impressive performance included scoring 418 runs at an average of 59.71, with three fifties and a hundred. Despite his success, he was eventually dropped from the captaincy due to the team’s poor performance and was not retained for the 2018 IPL season.

After several years with Kings XI Punjab, David Miller was acquired by Rajasthan Royals for INR 75 lakh during the IPL Players Auction for the 2020 season. As a key player in South Africa’s middle order, Miller is expected to play a crucial role for RR as they aim to secure their second IPL title.

ODI Career

Miller made his debut in One Day International cricket against the West Indies on 22 May 2010, where he scored 23 not out to help South Africa win. Despite his impressive performance, he was selected for South Africa’s initial squad for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup but did not make the final team. It wasn’t until 2015 that Miller achieved his first ODI century, scoring 130 against the West Indies in January. He began the tournament strongly by scoring 138 runs off 92 balls against Zimbabwe in South Africa’s first match. In a partnership with Jean Paul Duminy (115*), Miller set a record for the fifth-highest partnership in all World Cups with 256 runs. In the crucial semifinal against New Zealand, he played a quick innings, making 49 runs off just 18 balls, but South Africa lost the match. Following a successful IPL season, he was included in the South African squad for the Champions Trophy. Although he participated in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, his performance, much like South Africa’s, was disappointing, as he only managed to score 138 runs in six matches.

T20 Career

He scored 33 runs off 26 balls in his first T20 match in May 2010, helping the Proteas secure a victory by a narrow margin. In the 2nd T20I against Bangladesh in 2017, he achieved his maiden T20I century, setting a record for the fastest century in T20I history with 35 balls.
