Fanning performed in one-act plays as an actress at the Towne Lake Arts Center in Woodstock, Georgia, when she was younger.[8] She made her acting debut at the age of five in a Tide television commercial in 1999, marking the start of her professional career. One of Fanning’s best performances to date was a guest appearance in the NBC prime-time drama ER. After that, she had other guest appearances on television shows, such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Practice, and Spin City. This was her first major acting job. As a young kid, she also played the lead roles in The Ellen Show and Ally McBeal. Fanning was selected to play the lead role in the 2001 movie I Am Sam, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Sean Penn, and her younger sister Elle Fanning.
