Early Life
Chuck Norris was born in Ryan, Oklahoma, on March 10, 1940, to Wilma (née Scarberry) and Ray Dee Norris, a World War II Army veteran who worked various jobs as a mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver. His mother had Irish ancestry, while his father was of Cherokee descent. Norris was named after Carlos Berry, his father’s minister. He was the oldest of three brothers, with Wieland and Aaron being his younger siblings. Tragically, Wieland was killed in the Vietnam War in 1970 at the age of 27, fulfilling a prediction made earlier by him.
At age 16, Norris’ parents divorced, and he moved with his mother and brothers to Prairie Village, Kansas, and later to Torrance, California. Norris has described his childhood as difficult. He was shy, nonathletic, and struggled academically. His father’s intermittent work and long drinking binges contributed to a tough family life, and Norris often felt embarrassed by his father’s behavior.
