Fineman is the daughter of painter Ellen Gunn and biotechnology executive David Fineman. She has two sisters: Emma, a visual artist, and Alexia (Leka), a CrossFit athlete. Her father is Jewish, while her mother is a Protestant. Fineman grew up attending Camp Kee Tov, a Jewish day camp at Congregation Beth El in Berkeley. She graduated from Piedmont High School in 2006, where her acting teacher praised her for being equally talented in both comedy and drama. During her junior year, Fineman directed Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman and, in her senior year, The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler.
She also took on lead roles in The Visit by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley. After graduating, she returned to the school to direct plays and conduct workshops. While in high school, Fineman gained some fame by impersonating a peafowl on the Late Show with David Letterman after winning a bird-calling competition. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from the Stella Adler Studio of Acting at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2011.
