Early life and education

After her parents split, Owens, who was born in White Plains, New York, was raised by her grandparents along with her siblings starting when she was 11 or 12. Out of four children, she is the third. She added that North Carolina was the birthplace of her paternal grandpa, Robert Owens, a Black American. Through her grandmother, who is originally from Saint Thomas, the Virgin Islands, Owens also has Caribbean American ancestry. She is Stamford High School alumna. A group of white male students, among them the son of future Democratic governor and mayor Dannel Malloy, left Owens three racist voicemails totaling two minutes in 2007 when Owens was a 17-year-old senior in Stamford, Connecticut’s high school.
