Early life

Delson was born and reared in Agoura Hills, CA. He attended Agoura High School alongside his friend Mike Shinoda. Delson began playing the guitar when he was 12 years old, after previously playing the trumpet. He liked listening to Guns N’ Roses and Metallica. He formed the rock band Relative Degree in 1995 with drummer Rob Bourdon, but the band disintegrated after their first live performance in 1996. Delson attended UCLA and lived with bassist Dave Farrell for three years. 

He majored in communication studies and subsequently interned for Jeff Blue, Zomba Music’s vice president of A&R. Blue shared his perspective and experience in the music industry with Delson, as well as offering him constructive input on musical ideas. Delson earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from UCLA in 1999. He pondered going law school after graduation, but instead chose a career as a professional musician.

Music career

Delson, Mike Shinoda, and Rob Bourdon established Xero, Linkin Park’s first iteration, in 1996. The band quickly added vocalist Mark Wakefield, bassist Dave Farrell, and turntablist Joe Hahn. After Wakefield left Xero, Delson sought assistance from his previous boss, Jeff Blue of Zomba Music, in finding a replacement. Blue led the band to Chester Bennington, who auditioned and eventually became the band’s full-time vocalist. Blue then joined Warner Bros. Records as vice president of A&R, where he assisted the band in securing a record deal. Delson played guitar on all seven Linkin Park albums. He also performed bass on Hybrid Theory after Farrell departed Linkin Park to tour with another band. Following the release of Hybrid Theory, Delson was closely involved.

They co-produced The Hunting Party (2014) and One More Light (2017). While working on The Hunting Party, record producer Rick Rubin encouraged Delson to highlight his guitar skills by inserting more guitar solos than on the band’s prior albums. Delson noted on the new approach, “On the last few records, I’d been focusing on other instruments…” But these songs are about rediscovering the guitar and having a great time with it.” He also supervised the band’s business activities, such as marketing and finance, alongside bandmates Farrell and Bourdon.

Playing Style And Equipment

Delson has remarked that he “doesn’t like to show off” and that he tries to play his guitar such that it sounds like a keyboard or strings so that it blends in with the band’s hip-hop and electronica-style tunes. Delson has also claimed that he prefers to create a gritty, “sampled” atmosphere with his sound. Although he described himself as a “fervent opponent of guitar leads,” he began performing solos in the Minutes to Midnight era after being urged by his friends. Delson plays guitar solos on the songs “What I’ve Done,” “In Pieces,” and “The Little Things Give You Away. also performed several solos on Linkin Park’s sixth studio album, The Hunting Party.
