Askren began wrestling at the age of six, introduced to the sport by his father, Chuck, though he didn’t fully commit until the sixth grade when he joined a wrestling club. In high school, he competed for Arrowhead High School in Wisconsin, where he became a two-time WIAA state champion and earned national placements in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman disciplines.
As a college athlete at the University of Missouri, Askren trained alongside future UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley and future Bellator Lightweight Champion Michael Chandler. During his freshman season (2003–2004), he won the Big 12 Conference Championship and finished second at the NCAA Championships, both times facing Oklahoma State’s Chris Pendleton. He repeated as runner-up to Pendleton the following year.
