Arvind Kejriwal, born on 16 August 1968, is an Indian politician, activist, and former bureaucrat. He is currently serving as the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi, a position he has held since 2015 with a previous term from 2013 to 2014. Kejriwal has been the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party since 2012 and represents the New Delhi constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. Additionally, he was honored with the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2006 for his work in the Parivartan movement advocating for transparent governance. In 2012, the Aam Aadmi Party was founded by him. The following year, he became the Chief Minister of Delhi but stepped down after 49 days due to challenges in garnering support for his proposed anti-corruption bill. In 2015, AAP secured a remarkable majority in the Delhi Legislative assembly elections. In the subsequent 2020 elections, AAP once again emerged victorious in Delhi, leading to Kejriwal being sworn in as Chief Minister for the third consecutive term. Beyond Delhi, his party achieved another significant win in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. However, in March 2024, he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate over allegations of involvement in a liquor scam related to the Delhi Government of AAP. This arrest marked him as the first sitting chief minister in India to face such charges. The Enforcement Directorate also accused him of surveilling their officials, noting that he had ignored nine prior summons from the agency. Despite Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s plea against the arrest being rejected by the Delhi High Court, his ministers Satyendra Jain and Manish Sisodia remained in custody without bail or conviction for approximately two years.
