Arthur Blank was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, to Jewish parents, Max Blank, a pharmacist, and Molly Blank. He has an older brother named Michael. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York City before earning a degree from Babson Institute (now Babson College) in 1963.
Career
Blank began his professional journey as a senior accountant at Arthur Young and Company. He then joined the Daylin Corporation, eventually becoming president of its Elliott’s Drug Stores/Stripe Discount Stores division. After that division was sold off, he transitioned to Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers, where he worked under CEO Bernard Marcus as vice president of finance.
In 1978, both Blank and Marcus were dismissed during a corporate power struggle. That same year, they co-founded The Home Depot. With the help of New York investment banker Ken Langone, who secured early funding, and merchandising expert Patrick Farrah, they launched a new retail concept focused on providing a one-stop shop for do-it-yourself home improvement. The first two Home Depot stores opened on June 22, 1979, in Atlanta.
