Early Life
Arsène Charles Ernest Wenger was born on 22 October 1949 in Strasbourg, Alsace, as the youngest of three children to Alphonse and Louise Wenger. During the 1950s, he lived in Duppigheim but spent most of his time in nearby Duttlenheim, a village located about 16 km (10 miles) southwest of Strasbourg. Like many Alsatians during World War II, his father Alphonse was forcibly conscripted into the German Army following Germany’s annexation of Alsace-Lorraine, and in October 1944, at the age of 24, he was sent to fight on the Eastern Front.
The Wenger family ran a business selling automobile spare parts and operated a bistro called La Croix d’Or. In his autobiography My Life in Red and White, Wenger recalls that the bistro’s environment—marked by alcohol, arguments, and occasional violence—inspired his early fascination with human psychology. Although his parents struggled to care for their children, the tight-knit village of Duttlenheim provided a supportive community that Wenger later likened to a kibbutz.
