Playing career
Slot began playing football at his hometown team, VV Bergentheim, an amateur team based in Bergentheim. After that, he relocated to FC Zwolle, where in 1995, at the age of 17, he was admitted to the main squad. Under Jan Everse’s coaching, Slot struggled with injuries and little playing time in his early professional career until emerging as a goal-scoring attacking midfielder in Zwolle. After a 13-year absence, FC Zwolle won the Eerste Divisie in 2002, allowing them to rejoin the Eredivisie. In the same year, Slot relocated to NAC Breda.
Under Henk ten Cate’s direction, NAC Breda achieved their highest league performance since 1956 when they placed fourth in the Eredivisie during Slot’s inaugural season. NAC Breda lost 0-1 and 5-0 to Newcastle United in the 2003 UEFA Cup first round, where Slot played his sole games in European football. Before returning to FC Zwolle in the Eerste Divisie in 2009, initially on loan and then on a permanent basis in 2010, he had spent the summer of 2007 playing for Sparta Rotterdam. Slot played one final season in the Eredivisie before ending his playing career, after FC Zwolle won the Eerste Divisie in 2012. His teammate Edwin de Graaf said he was “not so fast”.
Coaching career
In his latter years as a player at PEC Zwolle, Slot acted like a coach, according to teammate Bram van Polen. Slot joined the PEC Zwolle staff after retiring from competition in 2013 and served as a junior coach for a year before being hired by Henk de Jong as an assistant coach at Cambuur. Slot continued to serve as an assistant coach at Cambuur under the direction of Rob Maas and Marcel Keizer following De Jong’s departure from the team in 2016. After finishing last in the Eredivisie in 2016, the team was demoted to the Eerste Divisie.
