Her mother taught second grade until retiring at age 70, while her father, a retired sportswriter and columnist for the Star Tribune, had Slovene heritage. Her senior thesis, titled “Uncovering the Dome,” is a 250-page history of the politics surrounding the construction of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, which was published by Waveland Press in 1986. Following Yale, she enrolled at the University of Chicago Law School, where she was an associate editor of the University of Chicago Law Review and graduated with high honors in 1985.
