Kingston was born and raised in Epsom, Surrey, to Anthony Kingston, a British butcher, and his German wife, Margarethe (née Renneisen). On her father’s side, her great-great-grandmother was Jewish, a heritage she explored during an appearance on the genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are? Her maternal uncle is actor Walter Renneisen. She has two younger sisters: Susie, who was born with mental and physical disabilities due to oxygen deprivation at birth, and Nicola, a former actress who appeared in the same 1996 production of Moll Flanders in which Kingston starred.
Inspired by a teacher at Rosebery School for Girls, Kingston pursued acting and performed in a Surrey County Youth Theatre production of Tom Jones, playing Mrs. Fitzpatrick alongside Sean Pertwee as Captain Fitzpatrick and Tom Davison as Thwackum. She later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) for three years and subsequently joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.
