Thompson was born on May 31, 1961, in Rochester, Minnesota, as one of five children of Clifford and Barbara Barry Thompson, the latter being a musician. She has two sisters, Coleen Goodrich and Shannon Katona, as well as two brothers, Andrew and Barry. From a young age, Thompson studied ballet and began dancing professionally by age 14. She won scholarships to prestigious ballet schools, including the San Francisco Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and the American Ballet Theatre.
At 20, she danced with the American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company (then known as ABT II). However, Mikhail Baryshnikov, the artistic director at the time, told her, “You’re a lovely dancer, but you’re too stocky.” This moment was pivotal for her; she decided to shift her focus away from ballet, recognizing it would allow her to explore other opportunities.
