Early life
Berry was born Maria Halle Berry in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 14, 1966, to Judith Ann (née Hawkins), an English immigrant from Liverpool, and Jerome Jesse Berry, an African-American. She formally changed her name to Halle Maria Berry when she was five years old. Her middle name was chosen by her parents after visiting Halle’s Department Store, a Cleveland icon at the time. Berry’s mother was a psychiatric nurse, and her father worked in the same hospital as a psychiatric ward attendant before becoming a bus driver.
