Early Life and Education
Hakim was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on June 26, 1983. Her family escaped the country during the Soviet–Afghan War when she was just six months old, traveling overland to Pakistan with the assistance of people smugglers. After two years in Pakistan, they migrated to Australia in 1986 when she was three years old. She attended Macarthur Girls High School in Parramatta, where she played the violin and served as sports captain and prefect. She also attended Parramatta West Public School.
Hakim studied for a Bachelor of Arts in Media from 2002 to 2004 at Macquarie University, where she was a board member of the Macquarie University Union. In 2005, she earned a Diploma in Journalism from Macleay College in Sydney and later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism through distance education at Monash University from 2007 to 2009, alongside a cadetship at the Special Broadcasting Service.

Career
Yalda Hakim returned to Kabul in 2008 to produce her first report for Dateline, subsequently covering stories from around the globe for both Dateline and SBS World News Australia. In 2009, she received the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Prize for Best Australian Television News Coverage and was also a finalist for the Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year Award. Starting in 2011, Hakim co-hosted Dateline with fellow video journalist Mark Davis, with the two taking turns to present the program in approximately six-week intervals while the other was on assignment.
In December 2012, it was announced that Hakim would join the BBC. She had been in discussions with BBC executives since April 2012 after being approached at a broadcasting conference in Brisbane. Additional meetings took place in New York, Dubai, and Afghanistan, leading to her first appearance on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel in March 2013. In October 2013, she conducted an interview with Hamid Karzai, then-President of Afghanistan, for Newsnight. From March 2014 onward, Hakim began appearing as a presenter on Impact and eventually became the program’s main presenter later that year.
