Who Is Vishal Patil?

Vishal Prakashbapu Patil is an Indian politician who serves as the Lok Sabha MP for Sangli since 2024. A member of the Indian National Congress, he was elected as an Independent candidate from Sangli. An independent MP-elect from Maharashtra met with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday, June 6, indicating support for the grand old party. Vishal Patil, affiliated with Congress, ran as an independent candidate in Sangli after the seat was given to the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance partner Shiv Sena (UBT) based on the seat-sharing agreement for the Lok Sabha elections. Despite Uddhav Thackeray’s refusal to relinquish the seat to Congress, Patil emerged victorious as an independent candidate, surpassing his closest Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) competitor Sanjay (Kaka) Patil by a margin of 1,00,053 votes. Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Chandrahar Patil received 60,860 votes.

Vishal Patil, an independent candidate with ties to the Congress party, won the Sangli Lok Sabha seat. He declared his backing for the Congress, INDIA bloc, and the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Patil, the grandson of ex-Maharashtra Chief Minister Vasant Dada Patil, emerged victorious in a closely fought election against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sanjay Kaka Patil and Shiv Sena (UBT) contender Chandrahar Patil.

Vijay Patil’s support represents a significant advantage for Congress, which won 99 seats in the Lok Sabha, up from 52 in the last election. The Congress party and its allies emerged victorious in 30 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra. In contrast, the BJP-NCP-Shiv Sena Mahayuti alliance only won 17 seats. A gathering of the members of the INDIA bloc took place in the capital city on Wednesday to review the outcomes of the Lok Sabha elections.

Vishal Patil, the son of former MP Prakashbabu Patil, has become the sixth MP from the Patil family to represent the Congress in the Sangli seat. The Sangli constituency has held a total of 19 elections for the Lok Sabha, including two by-polls, with the BJP winning twice and the PWP once, while the Congress has emerged victorious in the remaining 16 elections.

Personal life

Vishal Patil, the grandson of ex-Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil, is the son of former MP Prakashbapu Vasantdada Patil and Mahila Pradesh Congress leader Shailja Patil. His younger brother is former Union Minister of State for Coal, Pratik Prakashbapu Patil. He is married to Pooja and has two daughters, Ehita and Aritra.

Patil ran for the Sangli Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 under the Swabhimani Paksha party but was defeated by Sanjaykaka Patil from the Bharatiya Janata Party with a margin of 164,352 votes. In 2024, Vishal Patil contested independently after the Indian National Congress party failed to reach an agreement with its ally, Shiv Sena (UBT), in Sangli. Vishal Patil emerged victorious and secured a seat in the Parliament of India.
