Virat Kohli Early life

Virat Kohli was born in Delhi on 5 November 1988 to a Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Prem Nath Kohli, was a criminal lawyer, while his mother, Saroj Kohli, was a housewife. Kohli has an older brother named Vikas and an older sister named Bhawna. His childhood was in Uttam Nagar, where he started his education at Vishal Bharti Public School. From a very young age, Kohli showed a keen interest in cricket and would often ask his father to bowl to him while showcasing his natural talent with a cricket bat.

In 1998, the West Delhi Cricket Academy (WDCA) was established. Prem Kohli supported his son’s passion for cricket by connecting him with Rajkumar Sharma. Despite challenges, Kohli joined the under-15 Delhi team after training at WDCA and playing matches at the Sumeet Dogra Academy in Vasundhara Enclave. He later moved to Saviour Convent School to focus on his cricket career.

On 18 December 2006, Kohli lost his father to a cerebral attack. His father was instrumental in supporting his cricket training during his childhood. Kohli credits his father for driving him to practice daily and expresses missing him. After his father’s passing, Kohli took cricket more seriously, dedicating himself fully to the sport. The family lived in Meera Bagh, Paschim Vihar until 2015 when they moved to Gurgaon.

Virat Kohli Cricket Career

The West Delhi Cricket Academy was established in 1998, with Kohli being among the inaugural batch of trainees under the guidance of Rajkumar Sharma. Kohli’s cricket journey began in October 2002 when he played for the Delhi Under-15 team in the Polly Umrigar Trophy, eventually captaining the team in the subsequent tournament. He excelled in the 2003-04 Vijay Merchant Trophy as the top run-scorer while representing the Delhi Under-17 team. At 18 years old, Kohli debuted for Delhi in first-class cricket against Tamil Nadu, scoring 10 runs. His Under-19 debut came in July 2006 during India’s tour of England, where he contributed to India’s victories in both ODI and Test series. The following year, Kohli entered the T20 arena and achieved the highest run tally in the Inter-State T20 Championship with 179 runs.

The year 2008 proved to be transformative for Kohli as he led the Under-19 Cricket World Cup-winning team, secured a $30,000 youth contract with RCB for the IPL, and made his international debut. Subsequently, after a minor injury, Kohli took over Gambhir’s position in the tri-series in Sri Lanka and batted at no. 4 during the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy while filling in for the injured Yuvraj Singh. In the 2010 tri-nation ODI tournament in Bangladesh, Tendulkar’s absence allowed Kohli to participate in every match, leading to praise from then-captain MS Dhoni for his outstanding performance.

Kohli was a member of the 2011 World Cup-winning team and was the first Indian batsman to achieve a century on his World Cup debut. He had a disappointing Test debut against West Indies in Kingston, scoring only 76 runs in five innings. In 2015, he made history by scoring a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match. Kohli set a new record during South Africa’s tour of India as the quickest batsman to reach 1,000 runs in T20I cricket, achieving this milestone in his 27th innings. Additionally, during the ODI tour of Australia, he set records for being the fastest batsman to surpass 7,000 runs in ODIs and to achieve 25 centuries.

In the 2017 Test series against Sri Lanka, he made history by becoming the first captain to achieve six double centuries. That year, he accumulated a total of 2818 international runs, the third-highest for an Indian in a single year and the highest ever by an Indian player. By August 2018, he claimed the number one spot in the ICC Test rankings, joining the ranks of seven other Indian batters who have accomplished this feat. Furthermore, in October 2018, he made history again by being the first Indian, first captain, and tenth overall player to score three consecutive centuries in ODIs.
