Vat Savitri 2024: Story

According to Hindu Scriptures, there was once a young woman named Savitri who married Satyavaan, who had a short life. When Satyavaan was working in the forest, the lord of death, Yamraaj, arrived to take his life. Savitri discovered her deceased husband and pleaded with Yamraj for his life. Despite initial refusal, Yamraj eventually granted her three boons: restoring her father-in-law’s eyesight, reclaiming his lost kingdom, and bearing 100 sons. After fulfilling these, Yamraj hesitated to return Satyavaan’s life, but Savitri insisted, arguing she needed her husband alive to have the promised sons. Eventually, Yamraj relented and revived Satyavaan.

Vrat Katha

Vat Savitri commemorates Savitri, the wife of Satyavan who rescued him from the god of death, Yama. The festival narrates the enthralling story of Savitri and Satyavan. Savitri, the daughter of King Ashvapati, fell in love with Satyavan, the son of King Dhumatsen, even though his life was predicted to be short. Despite this, Savitri was determined to marry him. After their wedding, Savitri prayed for Satyavan’s longevity. One day, Satyavan passed away unexpectedly while resting under a banyan tree. Yama, the God of Death, dispatched his messenger to claim Satyavan’s body, but Savitri intervened and refused to let go of her husband. Despite the efforts of the messengers, Satyavan could not be taken away.

The god of death, Yama, appeared before Savitri and sought permission to take Satyavan’s body. Despite feeling uneasy, Savitri was promised a blessing by Yama in exchange for granting permission. She inquired about her in-laws’ well-being, which Yama granted. Despite being offered boons to deter her, Savitri persisted in following Yama as he carried Satyavan’s body. She also asked about her parents’ health, which Yama granted. As they neared Yama’s abode, he granted Savitri another favor when she requested children. However, a disagreement arose during their interaction.
