Bach used to compete for West Germany as a foil fencer. He won the German national junior foil championship in 1971 at the age of seventeen. He also took home a bronze medal at the Junior World Fencing Championships in Chicago, Illinois, in 1971.In addition, he took home three medals from the World Fencing Championships: a team silver in 1973 from Gothenburg, Sweden; a team gold in 1977 from Buenos Aires, Argentina; and a team bronze in 1979 from Melbourne, Australia. On October 26, 1980, Bach concluded his final competitive international match in Shanghai. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, he took home a gold medal for his foil team.
