History

On July 18, 1980, the Weather Channel was established by television meteorologist John Coleman, who had previously worked as a chief meteorologist at the Chicago ABC-owned station WLS-TV and as a forecaster for Good Morning America, and Frank Batten, who was the president of Landmark Communications, the channel’s original owner (now Landmark Media Enterprises). On May 2, 1982, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, the channel debuted. At first, the National Weather Service provided regional and local data for transmission. All forecasting has been completed on-site in Atlanta since 2002. Landmark Communications listed the Weather Channel and its properties for sale on January 3, 2008. The Weather Channel was acquired from Landmark by NBC Universal, Bain Capital, and Blackstone Group on July 6, 2008, marking the combined acquisition of the channel.
