Mukherjee migrated to Calcutta when she was ten years old, having been born on September 17, 1940, in the Jessore District of the Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh). On July 13, 1957, she wed Pranab Mukherjee. Together, the couple had two sons and one daughter. In the early 1970s, she taught English grammar and history in West Midnapore. She also earned two master’s degrees, one in political science and the other in history.

Her house on Talkatora Road was the group’s regular practice location. She also occasionally performed alongside her daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee, whom she taught to appreciate classical dance. Not only did she paint, but she also took part in solo and group shows. Mukherjee wrote two books: Chena Achenai Chin is a travelogue depicting her trip to China, and Chokher Aloey is a personal narrative of her intimate relationship with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In addition, she issued a number of Kumar Sanu’s albums featuring religious and Rabindra Sangeet music and provided support for the vocalist.

A hospital in New Delhi, India, hosted Mukherjee’s death at the age of 74. Despite being treated as a cardiac patient, she developed breathing issues.
