Steve Smith was born on 2 June 1989 in Kogarah, Sydney, to an Australian father, Peter, who holds a degree in chemistry, and an English mother, Gillian. Smith attended Menai High School but left at the age of 17 to play cricket in England. As his mother was born in London, Smith holds dual British and Australian citizenship. In 2011, he began dating Dani Willis, a commerce and law student at Macquarie University. In June 2017, the couple announced their engagement while vacationing in New York. They married on 15 September 2018 in Berrima, New South Wales. Smith is a supporter of the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League.
Youth and Domestic Career
During his early cricket years, Smith played as a batting all-rounder, bowling fast-medium up until the age of 15, when he switched to leg-spin. In 2007, Smith moved to England to play club cricket for Sevenoaks Vine in the Kent Cricket League. His impressive performances there earned him a spot with Surrey County’s second XI. Smith was also part of the Australian team at the 2008 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia, where he scored 114 runs and took seven wickets in four matches.
Smith made his first-class debut for New South Wales against Western Australia at the SCG on 25 January 2008. He scored 33 runs in his only innings as New South Wales won the match. • Steve took a magnificent catch of Pakistani batsmen Fawad Alam in slips which was a little controversial as Smith ran to the ball before batsmen played the shot, later it was declared a fair catch.
• On 24 March 2018, during the evening session on the third day of the 3rd Test match between Australia and South Africa, Australia’s Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera damaging the ball with a small yellow object (ball-tampering). At the press conference after the day’s play, Bancroft accepted that he was trying to alter the ball with yellow tape attached to some padding, with captain Steve Smith fully aware about it as it was planned during the lunch break by the “leadership group,” of the team. After the investigation, the Cricket Australia banned Steve Smith and David Warner for a year, and Cameron Bancroft for 9 months, from international and domestic cricket.
