Early life
Broderick Stephen Harvey was born on January 17, 1957, in Welch, West Virginia, as the son of coal miner Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera. His first name is Broderick, after actor Broderick Crawford from the television series Highway Patrol. Harvey had a terrible stutter as a child, but he overcame it. When Harvey was in sixth grade, his teacher asked him and his classmates what their personal goals were. Harvey’s teacher thought his desire was unachievable because of his terrible stutter; she mocked him in front of the class and called his parents to tell them he was being a “smart aleck.
Harvey and his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and settled on East 112th Street, which was dedicated Steve Harvey Way in 2015. Harvey has worked as a boxer, autoworker, insurance salesman, carpet cleaner, and mailman. He made his stand-up comedy debut on October 8, 1985, at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Harvey experienced homelessness for three years in the late 1980s. When he wasn’t doing gigs with hotel accommodations, he slept in his 1976 Ford and showered at gas stations and swimming pools. Rich and Becky Liss assisted Harvey during this period by providing a carpet cleaning contract and credit at a travel agency. Harvey was a finalist in the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search on April 16, 1990, which led to a long run as host of It’s Showtime at the Apollo, succeeding Mark Curry in the post.
