Early Life
Sourav Ganguly, the youngest son of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly, was born on 8 July 1972 in Calcutta. His father, Chandidas, was a successful businessman and one of the wealthiest individuals in the city. Known as the ‘Maharaj’ during his lavish upbringing, Ganguly’s father passed away at the age of 73 on 21 February 2013 after battling a prolonged illness. Ganguly received his education at St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata and later graduated in commerce from St. Xavier’s College in the same city.
The people in Calcutta loved football, which caught Ganguly’s interest at first. But, school studies interrupted his sports passion. Nirupa, not keen on Ganguly pursuing cricket as a career, held an opposing view. Snehasish, his older brother and a Bengal team cricketer, encouraged Ganguly’s dream. He convinced their father to enroll Ganguly in a cricket coaching camp during summer break. This all happened when Ganguly was in the tenth grade.
