She won silver in the women’s 200-meter freestyle and women’s 100-meter freestyle events during the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, making history as the first swimmer from Hong Kong to earn an Olympic medal and the first athlete from Hong Kong to win two medals in any sport. After placing third in the women’s 200-meter freestyle at the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2025, she went on to become the only athlete from Hong Kong to earn three Olympic medals. She also became the first-ever Hong Kong gold medallist in swimming at the 2022 Asian Games, and with two golds, one silver, and one bronze, she became the most decorated athlete from Hong Kong in a single Asian Games edition.

On October 31, 1997, just after the territory was turned over, Haughey was born in Hong Kong to Canjo, a Hongkonger mother, and Darach, an Irish father. She was baptized at St. Margaret’s Church as a Catholic. Aisling, her older sister, is a swimmer who has competed on the amateur scene for Hong Kong. Charles Haughey, a former Irish Taoiseach, was her paternal granduncle. Siobhán went to both St. Paul’s Secondary School and St. Paul’s Primary Catholic School. She majored in psychology and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2019.
Swimming career
At the 2013 World Junior Championships, Haughey became the first swimmer from Hong Kong to medal in the 100-meter freestyle, breaking the meet record in the process. She became the most decorated athlete from Hong Kong in the history of the East Asian Games when she won two silver and five bronze medals in the 2013 competition. made more history for the Hong Kong swimming team in 2014 when she won two more silver medals in the youth Olympics’ women’s 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley events. She was the 2016 Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Championships, and she assisted the Michigan Wolverines swimming and diving team in winning the women’s team title for the first time.
