Simone Arianne Biles Owens is an American artistic gymnast. With 7 Olympic and 30 World Championship medals, she is one of the most decorated gymnasts in history and is widely considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.

Born: 14 March 1997 (age 27 years), Columbus, Ohio, United States

Height: 1.42 m

Spouse: Jonathan Owens (m. 2023)

Medals: Gymnastics at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women’s artistic team all-around

Early life

After being adopted by their grandparents, Ronald and Nellie Biles, Biles and her sister Adria grew up in the Houston metropolitan region in Spring, Texas. After going on a day-care field trip to Bannon’s Gymnastix when she was six years old, Simone developed an interest in gymnastics. She trained there for 11 years under the guidance of Aimee Boorman, her coach. Before making her breakthrough into the elite ranks of competition in 2011, Biles won a bronze in vault and a gold in floor exercise at the Women’s Junior Olympic National Championships in 2010. She dominated the sport in less than two years. What distinguished Biles were her routines in all four events—vault, uneven bars, balance—and the great level of difficulty she placed into them. She also had an enthusiastic demeanor.

Senior career

The 4-foot 8-inch (1.4-meter) Biles, in her first year as a senior competitor, became the first African American woman to win the all-around title at her debut world gymnastics championships in 2013. She also won the bronze in balancing beam, the silver in vault, and the victory in the floor exercise. Biles won four gold medals at the 2014 world championships in the individual all-around, floor exercise, balance beam, and women’s team competition. She also accepted the silver vault medal.

In 2015, Biles won the U.S. all-around championship for the third time in a row. She was the first woman to do it since Kim Zmeskal in 1992. Her hat trick of all-around titles was completed at the 2015 world championships. In addition, she won a share of the team title, the bronze medal in vault, and the crowns for floor exercises and balance beam. With those victories, she now has the most world championship medals (14 total) of any American gymnast, male or female. Her ten gold medals from world championships were also the most ever won by a female gymnast in the history of the competition. Biles would subsequently increase those sums.

How Much Did Simone Biles Make Competing In The Olympics

Athletes all around the world try for the chance to compete in the Olympics and win glory for themselves and their country. That “glory” part is key, because they don’t get paid much for it.  In fact, those who don’t win aren’t paid anything at all. Those who do medal accept fairly paltry sums (in the scheme of things) of $15,000 for a bronze medal, $22,500 for a silver and $37,500 for a gold, in the U.S. at least. While the Olympics does cover travel, boarding and food, most teams have private sponsors that pay the majority of their costs. And, of course, the real money is made from endorsements, if an athlete is hyped enough to score them.

How Did Simone Biles Get Her Start

Biles, who was born in 1997, began gymnastics at the ripe old age of six. She went to a gymnastics center with her daycare on a field trip, and she started copying the other gymnasts. Later, the gym wrote her family to ask her to take up the sport. A marvel in every way, Biles began competing as a level 8 gymnast in 2007 (so, for those of us who don’t understand gymnastics, that’s roughly equivalent to “really, really good”). Up to 2013, when she became the first Black woman to win the all-around gold at the World Championships, she dominated national contests.

Olympic Champions Simone Biles And Sunisa Lee Set to Create History in Paris 2025

Simone Biles and Suni Lee, American gymnasts, are set to make history by competing against each other in the individual all-round final at the Paris Olympics. This event marks the first time in Olympic history that two former all-round champions will face off in a final. Biles secured the all-round gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, while Lee achieved the same feat at the 2021 Tokyo Games. Biles, widely recognized as the greatest gymnast of all time, received a warm welcome at the Bercy Arena.

Despite her impressive track record as a four-time Olympic gold medalist and 23-time world champion, Biles withdrew from the Tokyo Games due to mental health concerns and experiencing “the twisties.” She started her Paris campaign strongly, finishing second on the beam and leading in the vault. Biles topped the all-around standings while the U.S. dominated the team competition. Lee, who faced two kidney ailments after her Tokyo victory, finished third in the all-around standings. Jordan Chiles placed fourth but cannot advance to the final due to the rule limiting each country to two participants. Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour excelled on the uneven bars, earning a spot in the finals. The individual all-round final is scheduled for August 1st.
