Her first marriage was to Cuban actor Rafael Banquells, with whom she had a daughter, actress Silvia Pasquel (the surname Pasquel is a combination of Pinal and Banquells). Pinal’s second marriage was to businessman-turned-film producer Gustavo Alatriste, who was the father of her daughter Viridiana Alatriste Pinal (January 17, 1963 – October 25, 1982), who tragically died in a car crash at the age of 19.

Early Life
Silvia Pinal Hidalgo was born in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico, to María Luisa Hidalgo Aguilar and Moisés Pasquel. Her father, an orchestra conductor at the Mexican radio station XEW, did not acknowledge Pinal as his child, and she did not meet him until she was 11 years old. He had three more children from a later relationship, but Pinal had little contact with the Pasquel family. Pinal’s early years were spent working behind the counter at a seafood restaurant near the XEW, where her mother worked. When she was five, her mother married Luis G. Pinal, a journalist, military man, and politician 20 years her senior.
He adopted Silvia as his daughter, and she later referred to him as her true father. Pinal also had three step-sisters—Mercedes, Beatriz, and Eugenia—from her stepfather’s previous marriage. Throughout her childhood, the family moved between various cities in Mexico, including Querétaro, Acapulco, Monterrey, Chilpancingo, Cuernavaca, and Puebla, before finally settling in Mexico City.

Pinal has stated that she married at such a young age partly as a way to escape her repressive father: “I exchanged my father for a gentler one who encouraged my career.” The couple divorced in 1952, a year after the birth of their daughter, Sylvia Pasquel, who later became a renowned actress.
Her second marriage was to businessman and film producer Gustavo Alatriste. Pinal has openly said that Alatriste was the love of her life, and with him, she felt she could have stayed forever. They met at a meeting at Ernesto Alonso’s house when Alatriste was about to divorce actress Ariadne Welter. It was through Alatriste that Pinal was able to work on her film projects with director Luis Buñuel.

Career
Before fully pursuing acting, Silvia Pinal worked in the advertising department of a pharmaceutical company. Knowing she was studying acting, her employer allowed her to participate in radio comedies at XEQ. She made her debut in the comedy Dos pesos la Tejada. At the radio station, she met publicists who invited her to join an experimental theater company. With this company, she made her stage debut in Los Caprichos de Goya.
The director of the production was Cuban-Mexican actor and director Rafael Banquells, with whom she began a professional relationship that soon turned into a romance. Banquells helped them secure the Ideal Theater of Mexico City for their productions, where Pinal was chosen to participate in Nuestra Natacha, a work directed by Spanish actress Isabelita Blanch. She performed in numerous productions for the company, with her first major starring role in the play Un sueño de cristal.
