Early Life
Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab on September 8, 1999. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, a farmer with a passion for cricket, noticed Gill’s talent early on and decided to train him in the sport. Gill received coaching at his school before moving on to the Punjab Cricket Association Academy. He made an impressive debut in state cricket, scoring a double century in the Vijay Merchant Trophy, and later achieved a remarkable 351 runs in the Punjab Inter-District Under-16 competition, where he set a record opening stand with Nirmal Singh, scoring 587 runs together.

Career
Domestic career
Shubman Gill debuted in List-A cricket on 25th February 2017 against Vidarbha, and in first-class cricket on 27th November 2017 playing for the Punjab Ranji team. He achieved a half-century in his first match and 129 runs in the second match against Bengal. In October 2018, he was selected for India C’s team for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. During the final round-robin match against India A, he scored a century to lead India C to the final. In December 2018, he scored his first double century in first-class cricket, making 268 runs for Punjab against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy.
U-19 Career
He started playing for the U-19 Indian cricket team when he was 17. He scored two centuries. Later, he became the vice-captain of the India U19 team for the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Shubman did well in the World Cup, scoring 372 runs in five innings and ranking second. In one game against Zimbabwe, he scored 90 runs from 59 balls, helping India win by 10 wickets. During the quarter-final against Bangladesh, he made 86 runs off 94 balls as India won by 113 runs. In the semi-final against Pakistan, he scored an unbeaten 102 runs, leading India to victory by 203 runs. Gill was named Man of the Match. He contributed 31 runs in the final against Australia, assisting India in winning by eight wickets and claiming their fourth U19 World Cup win.
IPL Career
After performing well in the World Cup and local matches, Shubman gained attention from the cricket community and was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 1.8 crore in the 2018 Indian Premier League auction. Up to now, Gill has participated in 27 IPL games, achieving 499 runs at an average of 33.26. He has secured four half-centuries, with his highest score being 76. The young player is still establishing himself in the team, and the upcoming 2020 season might be the turning point for him.
International Career
ODI Career
Riding on a significant number of runs scored by the batsman from Punjab in U-19 and Domestic cricket, Gill was included in India’s squad for the limited-overs series against New Zealand in January 2019. Gill played his first One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand on 31 January 2019 in the fourth ODI at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Unfortunately, he only managed to score 9 runs in his 21-ball innings before being dismissed by Trent Boult.
Test Career
After scoring a double century against the West Indies A team in the Caribbean, Shubman Gill was promptly included in India’s Test squad for the series against South Africa. Despite facing tough competition due to established players in the team, he was unable to secure a spot in the playing XI and thus did not get a chance to play for his country. Nevertheless, in February 2020, he was once again selected for India’s Test squad, this time for the series against New Zealand Cricket.
