Scott McCreery was born in Garner, North Carolina, to Judy (née Cooke), a real estate agent and tanning salon owner, and Michael McCreery, a manufacturing systems analyst originally from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. His paternal grandmother was from San Juan, giving Scott one-quarter Puerto Rican heritage. He has an older sister named Ashley, who attended UNC Charlotte, and both siblings were raised in Garner.
At around five or six years old, McCreery received a book about Elvis Presley from his grandmother, sparking his early love of music. He began learning guitar by the age of nine or ten. He attended Timber Drive Elementary, West Lake Middle School, and Garner Magnet High School, actively participating in each school’s chorus programs.
