Samajwadi Party: TThe Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav is gaining momentum, surprising the confident BJP in Uttar Pradesh, where there are 80 Lok Sabha seats. Recent reports indicate that SP is ahead in over 30 seats. Yadav Parivar’s association with Kannauj dates back to 1999, when Akhilesh’s father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, won the seat. Akhilesh Yadav, head of the Samajwadi Party and a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is currently ahead in the Kannauj parliamentary constituency where results are being disclosed by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday. Having previously secured victory in three Lok Sabha elections from Kannauj, Yadav is now making his fourth attempt to win the seat in his family’s stronghold. Uttar Pradesh, which contributes 80 members to the lower house of Parliament, saw Yadav first claim the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in 2000, followed by successful representations in 2004 and 2009.
Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, is gaining momentum in Uttar Pradesh. Recent reports indicate that the SP has surprised the BJP, a party confident of dominating the state with 80 Lok Sabha seats. Presently, the SP is leading in over 30 seats, challenging the BJP, which is leading in 40 seats. Notably, Prime Minister Modi is trailing in Varanasi in the initial count, with Congress candidate Ajay Roy in the lead. BJP contested in 75 seats in UP this time, allocating 5 seats to alliance partners. The Samajwadi Party contested in 62 seats, while Congress and Trinamool contested in 17 and one seat, respectively.
Election results 2025: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav leads in family bastion Kannauj in early trends
The Yadav family’s connection with Kannauj began in 1999, when Mulayam Singh Yadav, Akhilesh’s father, secured victory in the region. Following this, a member of the family, either Akhilesh Yadav or his wife Dimple Yadav, held the seat until 2019. However, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Subrat Pathak clinched the seat by a slim margin of 1.08% by defeating Dimple Yadav.
Pathak garnered 49.37% of the votes, whereas Dimple obtained 48.29%. Akhilesh Yadav won the Azamgarh seat in 2019 but stepped down upon winning the election in the Karhal constituency in Uttar Pradesh in 2022. The 50-year-old leader triumphed over BJP candidate and actress Jaya Prada Nahata in the Lok Sabha elections, securing 60.4% of the votes, while his rival received 35.15%.
Akhilesh filed his nomination for the 2025 Lok Sabha elections on April 25, the last day for nominations. When questioned by the media about the delay, he replied, “There is a popular saying: Strike the iron when it is hot. I believe I am here at the opportune moment.” The Bharatiya Janata Party nominated its current MP and perfume trader Subrat Pathak to run against him. Kannauj held elections on May 13 during the fourth phase, with a voter turnout exceeding 60 percent. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party and Congress formed a pre-poll alliance for the Lok Sabha elections. Under the agreement, Congress was given 17 seats to contest in the state, while the Samajwadi Party received the remaining 63 seats. Polls were held for the 543 Lok Sabha seats in seven phases, beginning on April 19 and concluding on June 1. The Bharatiya Janata Party aims for a third successive term at the Centre with Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.
