Early life and career
Pitroda was born in Titlagarh, Odisha, India to Gujarati parents. In 1966, he started working for GTE in Chicago. He is considered a trailblazer in handheld computing for creating the electronic diary in 1975.
Return to India and later career
During a visit to India in 1981, Pitroda encountered difficulties in contacting his family in Chicago, which led him to embark on the mission of modernizing India’s telecommunications. In 1984, he received an invitation from Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to come back to India. Upon his return, he established the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), an independent telecommunications research and development entity. Although he had obtained US citizenship, Pitroda relinquished it to regain Indian citizenship for his governmental role. In the 1990s, he went back to Chicago to pursue his business endeavors. By May 1995, he had assumed the position of the inaugural chairman of the WorldTel project under the International Telecommunication Union.
In 1993, Pitroda helped start a foundation with Shankar near Bangalore in India. The foundation promotes Ayurveda, India’s traditional medicine. In October 2009, Pitroda became an advisor to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He also founded the National Innovation Council in 2010. Additionally, he was appointed Chairman of the National Innovation Council in August 2010. In 1992, his biography was published.
