Early Life
Coogler was born in Oakland, California, to Joselyn (a community organizer) and Ira Coogler (a juvenile hall probation counselor). Both parents graduated from California State University, Hayward. He has two brothers, Noah and Keenan, and his uncle, Clarence Thomas, is a longshoreman and former union leader in Oakland. The Coogler family moved to Richmond, California, when Ryan was eight. In his youth, he was an athlete—running track and playing football. He attended Saint Mary’s College High School, a private Catholic school in Berkeley, where he excelled in math and science.
Coogler enrolled at Saint Mary’s College of California on a football scholarship, initially majoring in chemistry. A creative writing course he took as a freshman changed his path after a professor praised his vivid, visual storytelling and suggested he explore screenwriting. When Saint Mary’s canceled its football program in 2004, Coogler transferred to Sacramento State. There, he played wide receiver and earned 112 receptions for 1,213 yards and six touchdowns.
