Ronda Rousey was born in Riverside, California, on February 1, 1987, as the youngest of three daughters of AnnMaria De Mars (née Waddell) and Ronald John Rousey, after whom she was named. Her mother, AnnMaria, was a groundbreaking judoka and became the first American to win a World Judo Championship in 1984. Rousey has diverse ancestry, including English, Polish, Venezuelan, Trinidadian, and Canadian roots. One of her maternal great-grandfathers, Alfred Waddell, was a Trinidadian doctor who became one of North America’s first Black physicians.
Another maternal great-grandmother was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Rousey’s stepfather is an aerospace engineer. At eight years old, Rousey lost her father to suicide after he suffered a debilitating back injury in a sledding accident. As her daughters grew, AnnMaria earned a PhD in educational psychology from the University of California, Riverside.
