Early life

In San Jose, California, DiAngelo was born Robin Jeanne Taylor into a working-class family. She was the youngest of Robert Z. Taylor and Maryanne Jeanne DiAngelo’s three daughters. She and her siblings lived in poverty with their mother until the latter’s death from cancer. Afterward, they moved in with her father. In her mid-20s, she gave birth to her first kid as a single mother, worked as a waitress, and enrolled in college at age thirty. Although she didn’t realize it until much later in life, she had long felt that being poor contributed to class injustice. She also thought that being “poor and white” also meant having access to white privilege. DiAngelo said in 2018 that “had [she] not been impoverished, her experience of poverty would have been different.”
