Robert Buckland Biography 2024: Born on September 22, 1968, Sir Robert James Buckland KBE KC is a retired British politician who held the positions of Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor from 2019 to 2021. Later, from July to October of 2022, he held the position of Secretary of State for Wales. He was initially elected as the South Swindon member of parliament (MP) in 2010 and held the position until losing it in the general election of 2024. He is a member of the Conservative Party.

Early life and career
On September 22, 1968, Robert Buckland was born in Llanelli, Wales. After completing his education at Old Road County Primary School (Ysgol yr Hen Heol in Welsh), he attended St. Michael’s School in Llanelli on a private basis. He received his law degree in 1990 from Hatfield College, University of Durham, where he had served as president of the Durham Union Society in the 1989 Michaelmas term and secretary of the junior common room. In 1991, he received his call to the bar in the Inner Temple. Practicing law in Wales from 1992 to 2010, Buckland concentrated on criminal law at the Crown Courts in Swansea, Cardiff, Merthyr, and Newport. In 2009, he was assigned as a recorder, functioning as a part-time judge at the Crown Court. He received the title of Queen’s Counsel in.

Pre-parliamentary political career
In May 1993, Buckland ran as the Conservative Party’s candidate for the Dyfed County Council’s Elli ward. He defeated Labour by a mere 3 votes in the majority. He was said to be the first Conservative to be elected in the Llanelli region “in living memory”. After the local government reorganized, the Elli Ward was included in the Carmarthenshire County Council, which was unitary. In 1995, Buckland ran again, but this time he was defeated by the Labour candidate by more over 200 votes.In South Wales West, Buckland ran for the European Parliament in 1994 and finished second with 12.2% of the vote, after Labour’s David Morris. In the 1995 Islwyn by-election, Buckland participated and finished fourth with 3.9% of the vote, trailing the Labour candidate.
Parliamentary career
With 41.8% of the vote and a majority of 3,544, Buckland was elected to Parliament as the MP for South Swindon in the 2010 general election. Buckland was chosen to serve on the Justice Select Committee in 2010. In 2012, Buckland and fellow Tory MP Stuart Andrew demanded that the mobile phones of prisoners be destroyed or sold to raise money for charities that support victims. They claimed that the phones were a “menace” and that the nation would benefit from the sale of the phones, since it costs £20,000 annually to store the phones of offenders. Both Shadow Secretary of State for Justice Sadiq Khan and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Legal Aid and Legal Services Jeremy Wright backed them. Buckland was chosen Joint Secretary on December 4, 2012.
Education
Robert was born in Llanelli in 1968. He went to Hatfield College, Durham, graduating in Law in 1990. Robert attended the Inns of Court School of Law, where he was a prize winner for Advocacy and was Called to the Bar at Inner Temple in October 1991.
Career outside politics
He returned to practise in Wales, most recently being a member of Apex Chambers in Cardiff. Robert is a door tenant at 23 Essex Street Chambers, London. In 2009, Robert was appointed as a Recorder of the Crown Court, sitting on the Midland Circuit.
