Richard Gadd Biography
When Richard Gadd created Monkey See Monkey Do for the Edinburgh Fringe in 2016, he recalls that the cultural climate was very different. “It was pre-#MeToo; sexual assault wasn’t really in the public consciousness, and male sexual assault especially wasn’t,” he says. At the time, Gadd was 27 and struggling with severe anxiety, prompting his flatmates to ask, “What are you doing? No, like, really what are you doing?” The show, which defied easy categorization as traditional standup, went on to win the Edinburgh Comedy Award that year. It is an intensely personal and harrowing account of being sexually assaulted by a manipulative older man Gadd had met early in his career. The performance is painful to watch, depicting how Gadd’s early professional dreams were exploited, leaving him feeling isolated and hollow.
