Five Army personnel died and an equal number were wounded on Monday in an ambush by heavily armed terrorists on a patrolling party in the Badnota area in Kathua. “I am deeply saddened by the deaths of five of our courageous Indian Army soldiers in a terrorist assault in Badnota, Kathua (J&K),” the defence minister stated on X. “My heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families; the nation stands in solidarity with them during this challenging period. Counter-terrorist operations are currently ongoing, and our soldiers are committed to bringing peace and stability to the region,” he remarked. “I pray for the swift recovery of those injured in this cowardly terrorist attack,” Singh continued.

According to reports, Badnota village, the site of the attack, has inadequate road connections, restricting vehicles to speeds of no more than 10-15 kilometers per hour. Exploiting the terrain, terrorists targeted slow-moving army vehicles. Positioned on hills were 2-3 terrorists and 1-2 local guides. They initiated the attack by hurling grenades at the army convoy before opening fire, with the driver being their primary aim, mirroring past terror incidents, as per sources speaking to India Today.

Primary investigations have revealed that prior to the attack, the terrorists had carried out reconnaissance in the area. According to sources, a local guide assisted the terrorists in conducting reconnaissance, providing them with food, shelter, and aiding them in reaching their hideouts post-attack. Efforts to track down the attackers in Kathua faced challenges due to the hilly terrain, fog, and dense vegetation in nearby forest areas where the terrorists are suspected to have fled. The terrorists ambushed an army truck on the Machedi-Kindli-Malhar road near Badnota village in Lohai Malhar, resulting in the death of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and injury of five other soldiers, who were hospitalized. This incident, the fifth terror attack in the Jammu region within a month, has sparked widespread condemnation.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, denounced the cowardly attacks on the army. “The fifth terrorist attack in a month is a severe blow to the country’s security and the lives of our soldiers. The resolution to these persistent terror attacks will be through strong actions, not empty words and false assurances. We stand united with the nation during this sorrowful time,” he expressed.
