Carter was raised in Riverdale, a suburb of Atlanta, and attended North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs. In a 2016 interview with Complex, he spoke about his rebellious youth, stating, “My ma couldn’t tell me shit. Nobody could tell me shit.” This attitude led him to steer away from academics and focus on pursuing a different path in life. Initially, Carter aspired to become an NBA star, but after a falling out with his coach, he shifted his focus to music. In an interview with The Fader, he reminisced, “I was a young and didn’t go to practice. That was the time I was really ducking school and it was all hoop and no rap. I would smoke before practice, get on the court and drop 30.”
Carter’s commitment to music caused him to frequently skip high school classes, often working on his music or at his job at H&M. This led him to almost fail to graduate, with Carter recalling in an interview, “I was in class with freshmen finishing work, and if I finished the nine assignments before this time I could graduate.” His graduation day went unnoticed by most, as few knew it was happening.
