Personal life

Khandu is the eldest child of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu, who passed away on April 30, 2011, while visiting Tawang as a constituent in a helicopter accident. He holds a degree from Delhi University’s Hindu College. By religion, Khandu is a Buddhist. He’s got two daughters and two boys. Pema Khandu is from a group of indigenous people called the Monpa tribe, who are mostly found in the Tawang area of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The Monpas are renowned for their elaborate ceremonies, colourful festivals, and ancient dance forms that are a part of their rich cultural legacy.

Early life and education

On August 21, 1979, in Tawang, India, Pema Khandu, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, was born. He finished his education in 1995 at Bomba, Tawang, at the Government Secondary School. He then continued his higher secondary studies in Itanagar’s Donyi-Polo Vidya Bhawan, finishing in 1997. When he entered at Hindu College, Delhi University, to study a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History, his academic career took a dramatic turn. His academic career came to an end when he earned his diploma in 2000. His school experience formed the basis for his subsequent political career and had a considerable impact on his worldview.

Career

Following his father’s passing, Khandu was appointed Cabinet Minister for Tourism and Water Resource Development in the state administration. As an Indian National Congress candidate, he became victorious in the June 30, 2011, byelection to his father’s constituency, Mukto, without opposition. Khandu was elected president of the Tawang District Congress Committee in 2010 after serving as secretary of the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee from 2005 to 2010. He succeeded Nabam Tuki as the Congress Legislature Party leader on July 16, 2016. In the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly election of 2014, Khandu was re-elected from Mukto without facing any opposition. After a year-long political turmoil, Khandu took the oath of office as the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh on July 17, 2016, at the age of thirty-six.

The development encompasses the enlargement of road networks, the construction of contemporary facilities, and the improvement of crucial services. Arunachal Pradesh now has 50,555 km of roads, a 64% increase in the last seven years from 30,692 km in 2016. The average annual road construction distance increased by over nine times to about 2,838 km, far exceeding the 300 km average built over the preceding seventy years. Over the past seven years, Arunachal Pradesh has seen a 65% increase in road density, going from 36.65 km to 60.36 km per 100 km2.

Social Life

In addition to advocating for the preservation of cultural and linguistic legacy, Pema Khandu is the Chairman of the Bodhi Language and Literature Promotional Society. He has organised recurring medical camps and launched a massive plantation campaign in Tawang district, among other noteworthy environmental conservation and community health projects. Controversies Accused of Corruption
In 2017, former Arunachal Pradesh CM Kalikho Pul in a note before committing suicide accused Pema Khandu of corruption. In his letter, he wrote,
“During my chief ministerial tenure I ensured regular funds for every district under SIDF, RE and NP [non-Plan]. In spite of this, Pema Khandu and his two brothers sought an emergency fund of Rs 6 crore for hydro project maintenance, which was given to them. These funds had not even been touched when they sought more funds in the name of flood relief. They asked for another Rs 10 crore. Rs 10 crore was the sum marked for flood relief in the entire state but even then I gave the largest amount of Rs 6 crore for Tawang.”
Accused of Raping a Minor
In 2019, a 26 year old girl filed a plea before the Supreme Court of India alleging that Pema Khandu and 3 others had raped her in July 2008 in the border district of Tawang when she was a minor. According to her, a man named Phurma Lama lured her to the Circuit House in Tawang on a fake promise of providing her a government job. At the circuit House, she was offered soft drinks laced with sedatives after which she fell unconscious. When she regained her consciousness, she found herself unclothed. She was then threatened by Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu to not to reveal anything to anyone.
Accused of Being Involved in a Multi-Crore Scam
In 2021, the All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) accused Pema Khandu and his relatives of being involved in a multi-crore scam. ANYA also claimed that Khandu misused CM funds allotted to various departments and that he committed scams under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), panchayat and hydropower schemes.
Accused of Violation of Several Laws
In July 2021, a police complaint was filed against Pema Khandu and Kiren Rijiju at Kimin police station in the Papumpare district by the leaders of four political parties for violating the Arunachal Pradesh Statehood Act of 1987, Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 (Restricted Area Permit) and Arunachal Pradesh (Land Settlement & Record) Act of 2000 while committing fraudulent contempt of Article 3 of Constitution.
