Early Life

Gascoigne was born in Gateshead, County Durham, to John and Carol Gascoigne, and is of Irish descent. He attended Breckenbeds Junior High School and Heathfield Senior High School in Low Fell. Scouts noticed him while he played for Gateshead Boys, but trials at Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough, and Southampton did not yield success. However, Newcastle United, his boyhood club, signed him as a schoolboy in 1980. His early life was marked by instability; his family lived in cramped conditions and moved several times. At age ten, he experienced the tragic death of a friend’s brother in an accident, which profoundly affected him.

Gascoigne’s childhood was also troubled by his father’s health issues and his own mental health struggles. He developed obsessions and twitches, leading to therapy sessions that he eventually abandoned. He also became addicted to gaming machines, which led him to steal to support his habit. Tragically, a close friend he had encouraged to join Newcastle died while working on a building site, adding to the challenges he faced during his youth.
