LuPone was born in Northport, New York, on April 21, 1949, to Italian-American parents Angela Louise (née Patti), a library administrator, and Orlando Joseph LuPone, a school administrator and English teacher. Her great-great aunt was the 19th-century opera singer Adelina Patti. LuPone’s heritage includes roots from Abruzzo and Sicily. She has an older brother, Robert LuPone, a Tony-nominated actor, dancer, and director known for originating the role of Zach in A Chorus Line. Raised in a Roman Catholic household, LuPone was part of the first graduating class of Juilliard’s Drama Division, which included actors like Kevin Kline and David Ogden Stiers.
