Early life
Dean was born to a Jamaican-Guyanese mother and an English father in the London Borough of Haringey. As a member of the Windrush generation, her grandmother left Guyana at the age of eighteen and immigrated to the UK.Her parents are huge admirers of Lauryn Hill, who inspired her middle name, “Lauryn”. She experienced occasional discrimination as a mixed-race child growing up in Highams Park. Her father used to dance around the kitchen while listening to music. She won second place in a primary school singing competition when she performed “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie. She was so anxious that at first she turned her back to the crowd and began crying from stage fright. She attended a Saturday school where she studied musical theater and.

Career
At 16, Dean started penning songs after teaching herself how to play the piano and guitar. She gave a performance at her capstone event. A young woman named Emily Braham noticed her and decided to recruit her as manager. At the age of seventeen, Dean was employed by Rudimental as a supporting vocalist after Braham got him into an audition. She performed for the first time in front of 16,000 people at the Sziget Festival. On the 2019 album Toast to Our Differences, Rudimental’s tune “Adrenaline” included her. She claimed that she was not a good fit for the role since she frequently sung the melody rather than the harmony. Her debut EP, OK Love You Bye, which was recorded in an abandoned east London bar, was published in November 2019.
Following millions of streams, she received an offer from EMI to sign a recording contract. What Am I Gonna Do On Sundays?, her second EP, was published in December 2020. For Amazon’s Christmas Originals lineup, Dean recorded an exclusive version of Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” in 2021. The song peaked at number 19 in the UK singles chart.
