Hailing from Kontha Ahallup Makha Leikai in Imphal East, Nilakanta began playing hockey in 2003. He joined Bhopal Hockey Academy in 2011 after playing for Posterior Hockey Academy Manipur. He was chosen for the public junior group for the 2014 King of Johor Cup and drafted by the Dabang Mumbai franchise of the Hockey India League.

Career in National Team
From the 2014 Leader of Johor Cup junior gathering of India, he started his public group career. They came out on top in the tournament. Nilakanta defeated Great Britain to earn their first international cup victory. During India’s tour of Europe in July 2017, he played against Belgium in his senior national team debut. Sometime thereafter, he likewise played for India An in the Australia Hockey Association.
